Yes we all know it's not very good. Howevere it works for some and not others. Why? Please post here whether it works for you or not so we can try to find out why. It has worked for me in the past but right now it isn't. I was trying to search for PAT intervals in offices as the poster of that thread said the search was not working for him. I tried "PAT", "PAT frequency", PAT Frequency office" and each time all I get is the "loading results" screen which goes nowhere. I left the other drop-down options as the default. Windows 7, Firefox (latest version) if that's relevant. Those who ARE seeing results - what are you doing different?

Interesting. It usually works for me, although it's slow to return results. I tried just now with your search parameters ("PAT Frequency office"), and after about 2 mins was returned an error message (code 502). During this time I think the search function nicked my connection to the forums - I'd opened it in a new tab, but was unable to use the forums on the original tab while the search was attempting to run. Tried a second time with the same result. So yes, not working for me right now. Windows 7 & Chrome here at work.

Same as Redken. My comment on the other thread was wondering if some people are not selecting 'OSH Discussion Forum' from the top left drop down box (showing as 'All Forums' by default) and perhpas putting the search in the 'Post By' instead of 'Posts'. Not saying everyone is making those mistakes but wonder if some do. Windows Vista Internet Explorer.

Usually works but often painfully slow and not intuitive. Lack of functions such as search topic titles only so you get any mention of PAT for example. Just did a search on PAT and got 3 pages within about 15 seconds. Only use it rarely and sometimes have to keep search words to absolute minimum otherwise it can take many minutes to do anything and then often crashes out to error status. W7 and chrome. W7 and IE9....no difference p48

Worked for me took a few minutes (Windows XP and IE8), however could not get back into the Discussion page after that for about 10 to 15 minutes (other web sites worked ok). It has not always worked for me in the past, so I don't think it is anything to do with out computers. Perhaps it had a fit when we all did the same search at about the same time. It probably though "not again" :o)

Did the 'PAT' search - took 15 seconds but did what it was supposed to. Windows 7 & IE

Did a search last week and worked (was the first time it had in months though!) Windows 7 here....

and now it is also working (albeit very slowly) for me too, so goodness knows why it wasn't before. Claire's point about the drop-down search boxes is a good one. "posts" is an absolutely rubbish description when what it really means is "terms to search for". (no this isn't what I was doing wrong but I have in the past!)

It's inconsistent. I have just done four searches in succession. One was quick, two were slow, and one was so slow that it got timed out. The other things that is poor about the search is that, if you click through to a topic from your search results, you cannot return to them. You have to repeat the search. This can become very wearing. Also restricting the results to 100 items is not good. Finally, you cannot search using a date filter - so you cannot search, say, pre-2010.

Just tried both IE9 and Firefox = 7 secs. However, previous attempts when I really wanted to find something were woefully slow or fails.

I've just tried the "PAT" search twice. The first time I got fed up waiting and gave up, the second time I went away for 3 minutes and there were results when I came back. So possibly the reason it's never worked for me is a combination of it being very slow and me not having the patience of a saint.

However, just tried an obscure search term and was timed out.

Just tried "Pat Frequency Office" but got error 502. For the money we pay the search system should be user friendly, intuitative and should work!!

You're not paying for the forum. The forum is open to anyone isn't it, not just IOSH members?

I thought I'd give it some quirky tests Iphone OS6.1.2 / Chrome browser - I hate to admit I have one of these but work insist) Tablet running Jellybean 4.1,2 / Chrome browser Both give time out errors :( Chrome on windows 7 (work are still in the 90s - and windows 8) both work fine. Are people still using Windows Vista! I'm amazed you're computer started up quick enough for you to have time to check the forums :) a 502 error is more likely to be a general connection issue... All tested on a BT Fibre connection - so it's got nothing to do with bandwidth at my end!

Clairel, the forum is financed by IOSH funds, which the members provide. Therefore Members are paying for the forum, non-members are getting a free service from the Members. Which really irritates me when a non-member starts mouthing off at anything to do with IOSH, or brags about their ceased/lapsed membership.

A question then, who pays for the people that perform the upkeep etc of the site? Definitely not the people who are not members! An interesting "ghost post" of mine is shown after my initial post. It is blocked by the moderator. Interesting as I only put up one post!!

It was a duplicate, Son of Skywalker. We think this happens if you press the 'post' button more than once. The record stands at five. Mods

I'd moderate that post - as to me it sounded like a challenge :)

Hi Moderator 2 When my message was posting it took a long time and eventually said that the link had been cut (or similar wording). I then posted again. This seems to indicate thet along with connection issues to the search function, there are connection issues to posting on the discussion forum. Can you clarify?

It might well be your connection or even your browser settings That's the trouble with this type of issues - very difficult to track down.

There was a period of around 10 to 15 minutes where I could access the home page, but not the discussion forum page. The message was "unable to connect" after a long time. The home page worked and other websites worked, just not the discussion page link. I also noted when I did get in that another thread had a couple of repeat posts, can't remember the thread but I think it was Heather Collins post and whoever posted after her. I think the time was just before 1pm.

Unfortunately I have no idea why the forum software is so badly behaved. I did succeed in posting a response twice by hitting the post button twice during what seemed like the age that it was taking to implement the action.

It would maybe be nice to have the clarification that it was deleted as it was a duplicate post rather than an inappropriate post.

In common with some other users, it does not work for me: Windows XP Professional (with all of the latest updates) and Internet Explorer 8. For example, I posted a message a few days ago containing "lightning" in the topic and message body. When I tried searching to-day, in All Forums, and OSH Discussion Forums all I get (after a long wait) is the error 502 message. Also in common with others, the search function works occasionally (rarely).
