Hello all, I have been requested to put togther some training for banksmans at a few of our company sites for our own wagons that would deliver there once a day only. I have looked online at this and it suggests they need to be trained by an approved person. Could I not train them after gathering info on the subject or would you advise against this (I only need to train say 2 people)? Has anyone got any good training docs I could have?

Hi Lisa, before you put together a training course (or borrow one) I recommend that you have a quick look at Regulation 9(2) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. Should there be an accident involving one of the banksmen in the future, (hopefully not!) the "competency" of the trainer would almost certainly be an issue. Personally, I would prefer to have them trained by an accredited trainer. PH2

Buried in Redkens link is the statement about seeing the signaller at all times. This is why s/he should be at the front and directing the drivers movements at all times. The signaller may then use assistants at the rear of the vehicle. To be signmalled correctly the driver should be operating solely by the signaller and not making any decision of his own wrt direction or stopping. It is a hard job and not a mere waving of arms. Watch the army move tanks around and how many Jumbo pilots look behind them when backing the aircraft. Bob

Bob, Lots probably, if the tea and biscuits are located in that general direction!
