Hi, I have a Security Guard that has had a week off for a minor knee opperation. His sick note was from the 4th to the 9th. He turned into work on the 10th and was sent home and told he needed a fit to work note in error. He went back to work two days later and mentioned that he was struggling with performing internal patrols as this meant going up and down stairs and this was causing discomfort to his knee. He has been sent home again and told to go back to his GP. He is now not being paid and is acruing BIF (abscence management) Can anyone advise if our HR have done the right thing as this seems a little harsh? Thanks Ivan

Have you not got an occupational health provider for your organisation? Best bet, have him referred and then make a more informative decision form there. Some companies have insurance cover which includes free occupational health provision and they do not even know it! May be worthwhile investigating this? HR are fully justified to send an employee home if they see that an employee is struggling/injured/or putting the company at risk.
