Hi We recently fire alarm inspection/testing in our office which resulted in a noise level of 87.5dB (A) for a period of approx 2 mins. Someone has raised a safety concern regarding the noise level, is this valid. Thanks Peter

Peter Although the noise exposure limit value is 87 dB(A), this is an average over eight hours. 87.5 dB(A) over two minutes is well below the permitted daily noise dose. LB

Peter, I'd suggest there's a far greater safety concern if it wasn't this level! Curiously, who recorded the sound level and why (or was this part of the inspection/test)?

Peter, whilst this level is uncomfortable, is is only for a very short duration. It does not exceed the peak level of 135dB(C Weighted) or the daily exposure limit value of 87dB (A weighted - based on an 8 hour working day). I would query why the alarm test continues for 2 minutes: 30 seconds to 60 seconds would be normal. PH2

Is it the volume or the tone which is causing this complaint? As far as a 2 minute duration test, this does seem to be excessive for a tone or bell, but it is not excessive if there's a mixture of tones & a voice alarm system. In these cases, it may be necessary to test different tones and/or messages which of course can take a few minutes

Being deaf can I have a strobe as well please? Who would hear the thing above all the screaming and who would worry about a little temporary threshold shift with flames tickling their bottom? Take the 'someone' to one side and slap them for being thick
