I have a site that has reduced its accidents by 40% over the last year due to our improvements
but we still have a long way to go and looking inwards we are mostly reactive
Reading this month SHP and its excellent article on positive safety culture
I now want to put a brief forwards to the senior team to involve them more in positive safety culture
I am looking at
employee questionnaires,
employee recognition schemes,
group discussions,
employee led planning meetings
project teams
Do you have any other ideas please?
if you have any examples of these (especially questionnaires) could you email them to me (private message me for email address please)
thank you in anticipation

I've not looked at the article yet, but (in my opinion) we've made huge strides toward a more positive H&S culture in our workplace over the last few years. We kicked it off with an overall review and clear out of silly rules and pointless paperwork.
It might not work for all, but for us the admittance that we were burdened with overcomplicated and pointless procedures that were of limited value and we were going to involve everyone in creating procedures that the team bought into and thought worthwhile and throw out the rest really got people on board.

We have a lot in this space and have had no accidents in 4 years (550 staff, office & field work). We had a specific set of objectives to achieve this. PM your email and I will pass you on some of them.

Is it not very odd that you explicitly state that you wish to 'involve' the senior team 'more' in 'positive safety culture' yet may no mention whatsoever of specific ways of doing so? Is it possible to 'involve them more' by EXcluding the senior team from actions you initiate?
As the research by Dominic Cooper and others indicate, the most cost-effective method of developing a safety culture is to train people to observe behaviour at work validly (i.e. reliably and accurately) and to provide valid feedback regularly on the ratio of safe/unsafe behaviours
Cooper and others emphasise how including senior managers in this process of training, and of measurement, make critical differences to effective outcomes

I have used questionnaires for all staff at our manufacturing site, to see where we are, they are a good tool to use, for the way forward, I also hold where we are talks every fortnight to all staff, on things like PPE, Accidents, working practices, etc.
