Dear All, Happy Easter to all. I am Mandar Raut from India currently pursuing my Masters in Environmental Health and Safety from the University of Sunderland. My course will be getting over in October after which I would be actively seeking employment. I need advice from experienced members to guide me through to securing an internship/ employment after the course. My email-id is mandar_rt@yahoo.co.in. Thanks in advance.

I take it you have no practical experience or trade experience.

Yes , that is correct. I have no practical experience as far as HSE is concerned. But I have a total work experience of 2 years in Environmental field with 1 year experience as a Green House Gas auditor.
To gain a practical experience I am seeking an internship after the completion of my course.

Putting it bluntly you could struggle as there are more experienced professionals on the market or out of work at the present moment especially if you have no HSE experience. The market is not the best at the moment.

Dear Mandar
Hope your well? Do you currently live in India or the UK? What type of plants was your previous role involved with?
Regards

Hi,
There are plenty of HSE internships with large companies offered yearly for people in your situation. However, the timeline for applications and interviews to starting the job is quite drawn out from my experience.
For example, I started off with no HSE experience but like you I was studying for a MSc in HSE Mgt. I applied for a internship with a well known international company which deadline was in November, I was invited for any interview in January, and offered to start in June.
I would think you have missed most of the internships for this year, but I would definitely suggest searching well in advance for internships for 2014 as they will be starting the whole process again around autumn time(as a rule of thumb).

Hello all,
@dickoa84 - I am in the UK yet. Now I will be doing a placement with Tyne and Wear Metro for 2 months to validate their EMS 14001.
@jphillips - Thanks for the reply. I am still completing my course so trying for 2014 was my only option. Do you know any website where they advertise such internships?

Hi Mandar, the SHP is the Safety and Health Practitioner - the official magazine for IOSH - http://www.shponline.co.uk/ . Good luck with your Msc, I too was student on the same program. PM if you need further advice

Try companies such as GE, AMEC etc, all have HSE internships and graduate programmes. These type of internships wont be advertised like your general job postings but will (depending on the companies attending) will feature/ be advertised in career fairs held at your university. Alternatively you need to search on there website directly. However, I very much doubt such internships with be listed in SHP.
