I am trying to find a conclusive answer to the following question: Do operatives of a MEWP (Cherry Picker) require a licence or specific training? Hire companys do a users awareness on delivery to keep themselves compliant but do not answer the question. Can any one assist please?

Although there are a host of training providers out there I would think the one that is best recognised is IPAF (international powered access federation) - these would fit the HSEs requirements of 'a recognised operator training course'.

Hi Robert, Usually the training provided by the delivery driver is only machine familiarisation. IPAF is certainly the UK Construction Industry recognised standard as well as being recognised abroad. Each operator is issued a card with a three year expiry date and competency can be checked on-line. You can do a search for IPAF providers on line or if you want send me a PM and I'll forward details of a few we use nationwide - no connections just satisfied customer. As has already been mentioned, there are of course other training/accreditation providers out there, but whether their training would be deemed suitable and sufficeint to prove competency is another matter. Hi All, Many thanks for the rapid response. You all seem to agree with my own thoughts on this one, but I thought I better just check. I believed it was comparable to hiring a car; you get a familiarisation from the company but still need a licence to drive. Then of course there is duty of care, suitably trained etc. I want to make sure my company is safe. Thanks again Robert Moore
