I am after opinions regarding the use of door hinge guards in older school premises, (guards that are fitted to prevent the trapping of fingers). Should guards be fitted throughout a premises irrespective of the age group or should they be fitted where only younger more vulnerable children are present? What is the general policy amongst those of you who work for Local Authorities. I am not aware of any official guidance, if anyone is aware of any guidance can you point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Isn't such a situation why risk assessments are called for - to do what's reasonable.
Why fit hinge guards to doors in areas of the building where kids are not reasonably expected to go?

To help with spatially unaware teachers...!? (to misquote another thread).
Seriously, yes agree entirely. Fit hinge guards (and other protective measures) in the places where the little darlings are most likely to end up hurting themselves. This probably does mean all areas accessed by children. In the primary school where my eldest goes (a new school, less than one year old), all doors in child-accessible areas have hinge guards. Makes sense since if you left them off certain doors, the novelty value would surely be enough to result in several of the little blighters "experimenting" daily with what happens when they insert digits in the gaps.... Or maybe that is just my son who does that!
One amusing point. Outside the main entrance doors there are metal tubular door stops that are in an inverted "U" shape and concreted into the ground. I just noticed the other day that there are metal "L" plates screwed into the brick walls near the top of the door stop. Reason... To stop kids sliding their arms/legs/necks(?) down between door stop and wall. Ouch! Might have been better to have a different type of door stop really!
