Morning,
We use a scaffold company to erect scaffolds for us to we can gain access and work on roofs.
We only use the scaffold for a day but they are normally erected the day before.
The scaffold company provide a handover certificate and I will be changing the wording on this to ensure it includes the first inspection however scaffolding must be inspected before first use and every 7 days.
Will the inspection the scaffolders carry out still be valid as it is carried out the day before ?
My guys have no competence in inspecting scaffolds, so in the scenario where the scaffold will require another pre use inspection will all team members have to attend a scaffold inspection course ?
I have been on this course so would I be able to do this in-house ?
They are only basic scaffolds with no design required and only used to reach the roof's of domestic properties

Hi the scaffold would only need reinspected after adverse weather (high winds) and in my book has been inspected after being erected albeit the day before first use. I would agree that all scaffolds should be given a visual inspection before use ie check the status of the scafftag green tag good to go red prohibition circle do not us. Regarding scaffolding inspection courses I am an Advanced scaffold inspector CISRS SITS but also an Advanced Scaff 18 years experience before moving into Safety in 2007. it's all well and good doing inspection courses but if something went wrong would you be deemed a competent Scaffold inspector having been on a two day course with no scaffolding qualifications?. I think not only my opinion tho, it would be good for you to to the course but only for appreciation. It takes years to become a good Scaffolder and only two days for a non scaffolder to become a Scaff inspector????

Can you trust the scaffolders to actually build the structure correctly. I carry out many initial inspections of scaffold and it would appear that what some of the Scaffolders deem ok are actually poorly erected scaffold that is no where near being acceptable and they are being erected by so called advanced scaffolders. I have met some excellent scaffolders but it would appear that some of them have a total disregard for their own safety and that of the end user.

A scaffold is a temporary works and the user should walk the scaffold on handover to ensure he or she is happy with the structure and it has been built as per the TG20 or design. Once happy and entry into the temporary work register should be made and a permit to load raised and signed by the temporary works supervisor. More information on temporary work can be found on the HSE website
seems a bit OOT but when you look at it pragmatically, its not that bad. Working at height is a big area that the HSE are always interested in

If you use a reputable company then it will be designed for your needs is whether it be averted, or for heavy use etc.
The 7 day inspection should be suitable assuming the reputable company would be back to check if there had been high winds in between.
Key to safety is ensuring no one except the staff company doing any changes or alterations to the scaffold.
That may make it unsafe and absolve the scaffold detector from any liability
