Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has encountered the problem that I have & maybe have some helpful advice.

In a standard vehicle repair workshop we have a number of two post lifts, the problems that we are encountering is when a vehicle such as a car is raised & a significant component is removed such as an engine then the distributed weight of the vehicle across the lift is altered causing the vehicle to 'tip' off the ramp.

We have looked at various ways of securing the vehicle such as ratchet straps securing the front of the vehicle to the ramp legs, but this not possible in most cases.

Has anyone else came across this before?

I've no direct experience but HSE/EHOs are aware of this risk. They suggest use of a four post lift when vehicle may become unstable through removal of large/heavy items such as engine and/or gearbox.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your thoughts, we have considered this as we also have 4 post lifts available but unfortunately some tasks are not practical on these lifts as access underneath becomes an issue.

This is one of the major issue with 2 post lifts and the HSE MVR have several examples of vehicles falling off these types of lift. Apart from the need to ensure the vehicle is correctly balanced on the lift you need to place extended vehicle stands under the heavier end of the vehicle especially if lowering the engine or gearbox.
You would not be able to safely tied the vehicle to the lift arms as the weight transfer would need the be further forward and possibly anchored to ground anchor points.
