Have a Friday look at this http://www.bbc.co.uk/new...land-manchester-22308165 It’s ‘elf and safety’ gone mad I say! You could make a sitcom out of it (see ‘The Wright Way’ ) but this time make it a funny one

I would be peeved if they didn't have nuts in the bag. I think we passed mad a long time ago.

What really gets me is the labelling that states:- Recipe - no nuts Factory - no nuts Cannot guarantee nut free I have yet to find a package which omits the last statement. What to people allergic to nuts live on? Chris

Yeah Chris I agree - now that is mad! I do wonder sometimes just what it is "we" have done to our foodstuffs and lifestyles these days that there "seem" to be so many allergies and adverse reactions to additives etc. I guess thats progress.

This dispels the myths that banks are no longer handing out mortgages: clearly the lunatics got one for this particular asylum.

Think it's just nuts? European Union labelling regulations require any amount of allergenic ingredients to be declared, specifically peanuts, nuts in general, soybeans, lupin, milk, fish, eggs, gluten, crustaceans, molluscs, celery, mustard, sesame, and also requires sulphites to be declared above a certain level.

Well hedgehog crisps didn’t have hedgehog in them. So I suppose, just because the bag is labeled Monkey Nuts, does not mean there are actually nuts inside or any monkey’s. So a miniscule statement somewhere stating there may be nuts inside sounds about right. If you can’t beat them join them.

Don't ignore the poor old hedgehog. In my (misspent?) youth part of which was spent in the West Country, in a very rural location, we had Romany folk helping with the harvest. The contact was fascinating and I can tell you that hedgehog did feature in one of their stews. Delicious! I know it is Friday, but believe me, this is true. Chris

Chris, there is a good reason why they include the final statement "Cannot guarantee nut free". This is because even though the food processing plant and the recipe are nut free, there could be traces of nuts on materials sourced from third parties over which they have little or no control. Previously I spent nearly 20 years in the packaging industry with many food customers. Whenever they audited, they always wanted details of the lubricants used on the processing machinery. This is because oil from tree nuts is used in some lubricants. There concern was that if lubricants with tree nut oils were used, that this may be present on the packaging and result in cross contamination of the food. Alternatively, they might be sourcing ingrediants from suppliers who also process nuts. Even though the ingrediant being sourced does not contain nuts, it could have ben cross contaminated in the supplier. Hence the reason for including the statement.
