I am led to believe that new UK and EU regulations Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013 come into force on the 13th May 2013 requiring employers to provide better protection against accidents caused by needlestick and other sharps injuries.

I am wondering how wide this legislation will go as I work for a Local Authority and cover schools where school nurses deliver injections and pupils bring in their own syringes (e.g. diabetes). Will safety needles have to brought into these environments

dixie - to paraphrase HSIS7 - the employers duties in the Sharps Regulations only apply if you are: employer whose primary work is healthcare; contractor working for healthcare employer.

However, it could be argued that similar risks exist in other workplaces and these risks should be addressed as part of the risk assessment process under the Management Regs.

The Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013 - are exactly that in the brackets.
