Hi All,

What road to take next?

I'm considering furthering my knowledge and thinking about what courses to take next. I have NEBOSH general & construction, also have NVQ 4. My thoughts are to start looking at post grad course or even a masters. My dilemma is time it takes to complete these courses and with working and paying for life, may not be able to commit completely.

Has anyone any suggestions on what courses would benefit me further?

Areas such as QA/QC, auditing, environmental and production management to start with e.g. have as many strings to your bow as possible - this is especially important in these times

The big thing is obviously a full degree/masters so as you can join the club as we still live in times and a place that put such things first and foremost above experience and all other factors

I'd agree with Bob, in terms of employability breath is more useful than depth.

O I don't know Breath is quite important for your future.

As Bob suggests, QA, Environmental, Auditing, also Fire and some sort of teaching Qualification all good.

I agree with chris 42, any of the following which i have below will help, these have got me two interviews in the past few weeks, didnt get the jobs though as not enough experiance in one (manufacturing) and the pay was too little in the other (County Council):

• NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
• NEBOSH Fire Safety and Risk Management
• NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management
• ISO 9000:2008, 14001:2004 and 18001:2007 Internal Auditor
• IOSH Accredited courses in: Environmental Law and Sustainable Development Policy, Waste Management, Environmental Systems Implementation and Introduction to Energy Management
• Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) qualified (up to NQF Level 4)
• HSE Approved First Aid at Work and Manual Handling Trainer and Examiner
• City & Guilds Senior Awards in Leadership & Management (Level 7)
• Diplomas in Administrative Management (AdvDip) and Management Studies (Level 5)
• European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).

Hi
If your NVQ4 is in occupational health and safety consider upgrading it to a level 5.
It probably wont improve your skills or knowledge base a great deal, but it looks better on your CV and is one of the routes to Grad IOSH.
I am looking into the possibility of a MCs in Occupational Health and Safety but its a 2 year course if you can only study part time, and if you Company wont pay for it, it can be a bit expensive.
If you want to expand your knowledge at very little cost or at no cost at all try one of the free online courses provided by ALISON certified learning.
I did the following ones to increase my knowledge base.
Diploma in workplace safety and health and the Diploma in environmental science.
The courses are free to do, you only pay if you require the certificate on completion.
If you view them just as a means to improve you understanding of certain subjects they are not to bad.

Good luck

Personally I would suggest you complete a level 5, it is a little different to the level 4 with the level 4 being less & less recognised.
I am advised the NVQ method being preferred as it requires a hugh amount of practical application.

Then try to get on board with a Audit company auditing the standards 9001 / 14001 / 18001 / 27001, you will need to do a auditors course for 9001 (1 week at approx £500)

The above will provide some real grounding for you, & why not go chartered?

Good luck

Hi all,
I am facing a similar dilema. I have completed MSc in Environment and sustainable Technology, but unable to find a suitable job in sustainability. Here in my country, EHS - Environment Health and Safety jobs are in demand. What do you think is a reasonable career step for me ? I was considering NEBOSH diploma but I am unaware of the level of qualification there.
IOSH course would help me ? If so which one would give me a practical edge in the safety industry.
