I am looking at developing my skills and open a new career path. So was hoping to get some advice on which qualifications hold more weight within the industry.
I currently have only done the IOSH managing safety training and now looking at doing either a City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice or NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety. What do people think is the best route?

The NVQ level 5 is a higher level qualification and will allow you to apply for graduate membership with IOSH. The NEBOSH General certificate is level 3 and will allow you to apply for technician status with IOSH.

Martin, I'm unsure if it is viable to go from IOSH Managing Safely to NVQ5, or if there is a minimum level entry criteria (Level 3 and above)?
Someone will know!

Someone will know! No course entry requirements. Link to a provider that will probably be cheaper than most as you do not necessarily have to go with city and guilds. Just a thought...... http://www.sheilds.org/c...cupational-health-safety

Jarsmith - I'm gobsmacked.... no entry quals!
Martin, you'd need to consider if you're in a position to produce the 'on the job' portfolio of evidence to satisfy the NVQ5 course? By all accounts it's a lot of evidence? Again others that had done the course can advise better than I!

SP900308 is quite correct there is a great deal of evidence to gather and you may need to be in a safety role to compile it

You will not pass if you do not have the knowledge or are working in a role which will not give you experience in order to complete the projects. So, if you choose to do the qualification then be warned it is not easy (as some like to believe) and you will be wasting your money.
I have studied all the NEBOSH health and safety courses then completed the NVQ and found the NVQ very arduous but, much more beneficial for practical purposes.
I am now going through the motions of completing all of the IEMA courses :-(.......addicted to studying!

Thank you for all the help.
I work for a local authority and are responsable for the Health and Safety Risk Assessment for my area and staff, I also do accident invigations and incident reports on a regular basis. I am also confident that I will be able to obtain a placement with the Health and Safety team to gain experience and skills to help with the qualification. Do you think this would be anouther experience for the NVQ?
In terms of been able to have a graduate membership or a technician status with IOSH would this effect my chances with first jobs with relevent roles? I was told NEBOSH was like the starting point and most people would accept it.

I have worked with local authorities throughout my career and they are great for the step you are to take. NEBOSH cert is indeed a good starting point. I would say start with the NEBOSH and then go onto the NVQ Level 5. Grad IOSH may open more job opportunities as this is a higher status but this is not really guaranteed. If you have the opportunity to work around construction (as I am not sure what division of local authority you work in) then I would choose the NEBOSH construction certificate instead of the general cert, as this will include more construction orientated syllabus.

I'm wondering if you have been slightly confused?
NEBOSH offers two levels:
Certificate
Diploma
NEBOSH Dip is quite academic it gives you a qualification at the same level as NVQ5
You will find NEBOSH Cert a considerable step up from Managing Safely
And either the Dip or NVQ are MUCH higher again
