Hi all - interesting question, what are your opinions on this please. Company employ staff some of whom are working on contracted basis through the summer months. As part of their arrangement they provide accomodation on site in caravans. apart from the obvious fire issues, emergency procedures, what other areas would you think would need to be addressed? I have thought of a few but wondered if you have any points on this. many thanks in advance.

Hi Daisy Some of the farms I audit will have between 1 and 75 caravans for seasonal agricultural workers. Consideration needs to be given to the following: All furnishings must comply with the Fire & Furnishings Regs 1988 - should be a label, but not always; Working smoke alarm; Small fire extinguisher and fire blanket in proximity of the cooker; Mains electrics tested every 3 years; All electrical appliances PAT tested annually; If any gas appliances, then annual Landlord's Gas Safety Certificate, and working CO alarm; If gas appliances, then all air vents clear of obstruction; All doors readily openable from the inside (internal key-operated door is not satisfactory); Safe steps, with handrail if more than 2 steps; Provision of fire safety emergency procedure: Fire assembly point and audible alarm if more than 5 caravans; External fire fighting equipment and water hoses if more than 10 caravans; Ready access for emergency vehicles; Surrounding area free of combustible material and dying vegetation; No overhanging trees (heavy branch cut one caravan in half!)
