If a member of the public climbs a crane would this be reportable simply as a near miss or should we involve the HSE? Police and Fire Service were involved. SBH

Hi, How did the man manage to get close enough to the crane in the first place? Have you excised your duty of care by ensuring that the site is secured? What kind of crane is this? To answer your question i would report it as a near miss within the company and put some actions in place to prevent this from happening again. I would involve the police if it is a break into site but I wouldn't involve the Fire Service or HSE unless something has happened to the fella that climbed the crane.

I would tend to agree with #2. The days when we might (or might not) have involved the HSE, unless there was a statutory need to do so e.g. RIDDOR are long gone with the advent of FFI. I see no statutory need to inform or involve them and no practical need to do so either. Of course with FFI many would accept that there is every reason not to! However, it is possible that either the Police and/or the Fire Service may have informed the HSE anyway. So, make sure that your house is in order, just in case they come knocking.

It was a 70 ft jib crane and he entered by leaping onto a car parked adjacent to the hoarding SBH

Must have really wanted to be on that crane. Lesson learnt I would have thought. I'll remember that route of entry in case I ever come across a similar potential incident.

Did the man from RoSPA really mean to say “The bottom line is that if things go wrong, it does not only IMPACT on the individual involved but also their family, the emergency services and staff who work at the construction and demolition sites." (my capitals)
