Morning all,
we have an employee with HAVs stage 3, he has been taken off the tools until further notice. We have Occ Health in place, external HAVS specialists/consultants and the HSL.
The employee has seen Occ health, the HAVs specialist and has also been to see the HSL for further testing, the HAVs results are confirmed in full.
This employee has also had a previous HAVs claim against a previous company and was paid out.
The employee has now contacted directly the HAVs specialist/doctor we use and has now said his symptoms have gone? bearing in mind this is an irreversible disease....
The HAVs specialist has now sent us a report confirming that the employee does not have HAVs??? after the same specialist sent a report only a few months ago saying that the employee was at stage 3...???
The specialist did not comment in the report at to why the results had changed, apart from saying that the employees story had changed??
We have now written to the specialist asking him to clarify why the HAVs stage has gone from 3 to 0 and the reasons behind the sudden change of story.
I am just amazed at this, how can this happen, has anyone else experienced anything like this?

SPR,
It does sound very unusual. I think it is perfectly fair to write to the OH doctor and ask for an understanding as to why there has been such a dramatic change in diagnosis. My own organisations approach would be to carry out 1 further Tier 4 assessment 1 year after an employee has been restricted from using vibrating hand tools. In a small proportion of cases you might expect some improvement of symptoms, but a dramatic change (better or worse) points to a non HAVS condition.
NB Normally employees go to HSL for a Tier 5 assessment when referred from OH. This includes further tests not done at a Tier 4 and I would normally reserve this for any condition where the diagnosis is in doubt (which I would highlight in my report!)
Can't comment further without specifics (which I appreciate you may not be able to reveal)

Entirely possible. The various "tests" applied to determine the Stockholm Scale are quite subjective with little or no clinical or medical element. Unfortunately OH surveillance is not always an objective and exact science.
