Hi,
Does anyone know if there is any guidance out there (approved or otherwise) regarding the design and construction of mezzanine gates? BS / EN / ISO standards, HSE or any other industry bodies? I have looked, but in vain so far! Or is it just inferred that building regs and WAH regs will indirectly dictate the requirements?
Many thanks
Stu

I'm also interested in any UK standard for these gates systems. Is the only acceptable system one similar to those noted in #3 ? The up and over type ( seesaw type so up at front and down at back or vice versa).
I have a number of gates that are effectively just poles across two posts. Obviously the person is in the danger zone when they take them away / put them, back but it is a conscious activity. I see no money to change this unless I could prove they don't meet a standard.

The whole idea of the up and over gate is to ensure that at all times there is a barrier between the edge and the any person who may be on the mezzanine.
The two poles between two posts used as edge protection leave an exposed gap after the poles have been removed and during the removal of the poles, therefore increasing the potential of a fall.

I agree Geoff the up and over gate would be the best idea, and indeed the information from the link in #2 suggests this is the only type that meet, OSHA or ANSI standards.
However there is only so much money and although I will push to change, there are some other things I would like the company to spend money on first. However If it does not meet a UK standard, then it will move higher up the list of things to do.
So the question is still are there any UK / EU standards for the design / construction of mezzanine floor loading gates. If not it is just down to good old fashioned RA and possibly adopting the American standard.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who works for a company with the two pole across two post type.

See paras 577 to 582 of HSG76 Warehousing and Storage - a guide to H&S (free download from HSE books). The authoritative word on these topics.
