Hi,
My company has recently purchased several pieces of equipment form the second hand market in India and unsurprisingly they're not CE marked. We intend to fully overhaul and update the wiring and guarding etc before putting this into use in the UK but obviously we're going to have to produce a declaration of conformity.
This isnt something I've had to undertake before and Im currently in the process of refreshing myself on the supply of machinery regs and its clear were going to have to produce a technical file and undertake a conformity assessment. I was wondering if anyone had any good links to guidance documents on the conformity assessment process or checklists etc that I could use (any advice is welcomed here). As usual, the company want the process completed ASAP so I'm having to learn on the job with this one.

Refer to BIS webpage on European Commission Product Directives under the heading "Machinery Directive"
https://www.gov.uk/europ...ssion-product-directives
To aid industry, the department has published guidance notes on the UK Regulations, which, in Annex N details additional sources of references.
http://www.berr.gov.uk/files/file52968.pdf
It also produces periodic reports on the meetings of the Machinery Directive Working Group in advance of the official Commission minutes.
Additionally, a comprehensive body of guidance on the Directive has been published by the European Commission. This guidance will only be internet based so as to facilitate quick and easy updating, be subject to regular review; and be available in a limited number of European languages.

One thing that I'm not certain about (I say one thing...) how do you define the scope of the 'machine'? We have a production line which is comprised of numerous stages of production and each state has numerous individual parts, motors, gears. Do you class the production line as one machine or is there a method of reducing it to individual machines?

From the Directive:
'Assemblies of machinery which are built with existing machines and new machines... in a new configuration... the whole assembly should fulfil the requirements of the Directive.'
My take on an 'assembly of machinery' (also from the Directive), is that if there is a single system of control for the whole line, OR that each individual machine is linked to a central control system for the whole assembly, OR if the machines are linked functionally and mechanically, then it is an assembly of machinery and the whole thing needs to be CE type approved.
This should still be relatively straightforward, as the technical file will contain all of the technical files of each individual machine in the assembly.
