Why do my gas engineers kept getting asked for their CSCS cards when going to a clients company. I thought they were only required when going on a building site. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Tony, a quick search of this forum will throw up dozens of complaints about these cards. They are widely misunderstood, with many clients and contractors asking for them without really understanding the limitataions of what the cards are about. They are all to do with making money for certain organisations that hold a lot of influence within the construction industry: not demonstrating competence. Provided that your gas engineers hold Gas Safe cards that should be sufficient. PH2

They are required anywhere the person controlling a location chooses to require them. If a client has decided that all contractors and operatives visiting their site must have a CSCS card then they are required when visiting that site. They are a statutory requirement nowhere.

Tony you are coming up against the blanket man /woman again "I have decided" You would have thought the Construction Site Certification Scheme (CSCS) would have been an obvious giveaway obviously not. From the Site CSCS "delivers a scheme for industry that confirms individuals working in the build environment have the necessary competence". Good Luck as usual you will be in the position of the we want it give it to us system. Ta Alex

Hi we had a similar situation in the water industry as MCG members were requesting CSCS cards as minimum for anyone working on their sites. We were able to agree a 'memorandum of understanding ' that our qualifications were equivalent / more appropriate. Something to consider!

Not wishing to be a pedant but CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme (not Site) and was designed (originally) to allow those trades without another recognised body to prove their occupational competency. Totally agree with achrn as unfortunately, in my opinion, the scheme has grown into a money making monster.

Like so many things it was a good idea - but then the money grubbers got their hands on it.

I stand corrected. Still stick with my views and agree it is only a money making scheme and proves nothing. Ta Alex
