My directors have asked for some ideas for incentive schemes; particularily ways to reward good audits scores achieved consistantly. I am concerned with giving cash or monetary value rewards. We are a construction company. Any ideas would be appreciated, and your experience of running such a scheme.

Martin Depending on how your company is structured maybe consider having a Floating Trophy for the best team or site. Possibly run it as a bi-annual or annual competition.

Martin PM me with your email address and I will send you a copy of a scheme we have just used on a €600 million construction project. Might be of use to you. Jonty

I wouldn't be concerned with this specifically, I know companies where an element of safety performance forms part of the annual bonuses scorecard and it works well. I know of a couple companies where it doesn’t work so well and manages treat it as a numbers game. Done well, it is quite powerful. You need to select the criteria cleverly and accept that what you choose will direct actions / behaviours (but this can be a positive!). In your example of audit scores, this does work well, but again comes down to the weighting of the different elements within the audit. A smart audit will not be "beatable" by managers adopting a "numbers game" attitude.

There are many ways of doing this and the benefits can be direct for the individuals / teams or for a third party - such as a nominated charity. This could be cash or could be a team meal / event out. Sometimes just a trophy / certificate and publicity in the company newsletter is enough. The important thing is to recognise the positive behaviours and achievements.

Thank you all for your comments; I will have to consider more carefully; our teams are quite mobile, therefore indinvidual team scores may be the way to go. We do post performance tables for one facet of the company perhaps We should post these for the whole company. From that we could issue Quaterly trophies and meal vouchers.

Have a look at the learning legacy from London 2012 build. They had a number such as breakfast vouchers, employee awards and many were effective.
