One of my collegues has just asked me what legislation we would need to consider if we were to install a 2m Large Inflatable Helium Advertising Cube Ball Inflatable Square Balloon (or similar) above one of our stores (which just happens to be close to an airport). Does anyone have any experience of these things? i can deal with the risk assessment on the ground and the COSHH but I'm not sure about the aviation side of things!

You will need to seek CAA permission to do this and if it's near an airport you probably won't get it. Are you organising this yourself or bringing in a provider to operate it? if it's the latter, they should be able to provide you details of requirements. it will need to be constantly monitored as I have witnessed a blimp being blown into the middle of a dual carriage way when a gust caused it to arc down on its tether point. How close are you to the airport?

Thanks, I'll talk to the manager as i'm not sure how close they are exactly. He just mooted the idea just to see if this "cheap balloon" was going to be too much of a PIA.

If you do go ahead, don't let anyone breath in the helium coz it makes a funny voice. I remember a guy who tried it, inhaled too much, passed out, and went blue! We thought he was dead for a while!

I'll be sure and add that to the risk assessment! He was looking at one 2m cubed so that would be A LOT of helium!

Here's another whimsical thought - a balloon-type advertising device might seem cheap initially but its operating cost could well rise....as a result of inflation !!!! :-)

He is extremely lucky to have recovered.
