Hi all
Any thoughts on the following because its the first time an incident such as this as ended up on my desk:-
One of our warehouse staff had to receive first aid treatment resulting in this person being taken to hospital for a check up. He accidentally pointed a bar-code lazer gun at his own eye, resulting he claims in blurred vision which caused him to have a headache and time off work. This is a first for me, anyone dealt with a similar incident and how did you resolve it. Bar-code guns are used extensively throughout my company and until now no-one as been effected in anyway. (our in-house training program does state that these guns should not be directed into eyes)

I suggest you first find out what class the laser is. If it is class 1 it is inherently safe. Higher classes are less so.
I would also suggest that you conduct some awareness training, so that people understand how much damage (if any) could possibly be caused by looking at the laser. If they know this, they are less likely to react badly to an accidental exposure.
Lastly, with a laser eye strike, the person going to hospital should be accompanied by all the technical information about the laser - wavelength, power, class, so that it helps the A&E department decide what to do.
A laser strike to the eye, even if totally harmless, can cause alarm. If your lasers are inherently safe, simply knowing that can reduce the alarm a great deal.

A class 1 laser can be stared at without causing injury.

Believe it or not, this topic reminds me of a brief chat with a shepherd during a recent walking holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. As the sheep in a flock look fairly similar to most people, I asked him if he reckoned sheep themselves could distinguish one from another. "Very easily" he replied "they all use a baa-code!" :-)
