Excellence in Health & Safety - phone calls?

I have had a phone call from "William" on 0208 956 4042 who wanted to speak to the MD of my business. He said he was from Parliament asking questions about the business in relation to Excellence in Health & Safety and wanted business details and aspects of what we do.
Anyone else been approached?
Is this genuine since there is nothing on the Internet to reassure me?

Yeah,
got another one last week. Same old spiel. Said that I had been recommended by Clients in the Greater London area and that my details had been passed on to "the Minister in Parliament" and that for a fee..... I stopped him there: I have never worked anywhere in England.
Ever since the publication of the OSHCR, I get about five or six of these types of phone calls a year. I just ignore them.

Thank you PH2 I suspected as much though this is the 1st I have received. I wish I could say that OSHCR registration has been bountiful. Most of my work comes from referrals from current clients or right place right time. I haven't advertised in 6 years which is a saving on overheads. Now if I can only get the costs of insurance, accountant etc to be similarly reduced I will be a happy bunny.
johnc I'm not familiar with that website do you use it often and does it pinpoint who and where or can it be blocked?

Thanks Jane, but this is not the same. It reminded me of the call I had last year which was from "NHS Press Office" a similar pile of expletive deleted linked to a directory giving preferential supplier status to the GP funding.
It's bad enough getting spam emails without the calls as well. Still that's the problem when your details are in the public domain.

You might consider my approach. Generally, I put them on hold....forever!
When I am in the mood for a little fun I spin a tale and invite them round because I can't deal with it on the phone. I've been successful only once, when a man selling solar panels arrived by appointment and was immediately turned away with a flea in his ear. By way of explanation I told him that I was wasting his time, as he wastes others'.
The look on his face was a picture

Ian, I like your style...
I took a call a few weeks ago asking to speak to my wife. I told the caller that she was on the roof fixing the aerial & that I was holding the ladder.
He then asked who I was & I told him that I was the butler.
He then agreed to talk to "Mr Butler" & we spent some time on the 'phone as I unfortunately was not responding as per the script he was reading from...shame.

Hi - had same today being specially selected to enter into a Parliamentary publication - along with the Queens Speech - only wanted a Kings Ransom - I gracefully declined.

Be aware of the poor sap at the other end is having to work (forced on them by the job centre or their financial situation) in these places and in most cases would prefer to have a real and honest job.
The abuse they get must add to their already low self esteem.

Walker,
I hear what you say, but my sympathies are with people like my 90 year old mum who is afraid to pick up the 'phone because of these callers or even worse when there is nobody at the end of the line.
She is registered with the Telephone Preference Service, but this does not stop the overseas calls.

I know it's slightly off subject but just a suggestion for your mum. Get an answering machine of the sort that lets you screen calls so she can hear who is leaving a message without needing to pick up if she doesn't want to. Works for elderly friends of mine.

Totally agree walker - some of us H&S bods may understand what it's like to receive grief.
Posting by Jim Tassell is sound advice indeed, as I did same for my Mother - you would be surprised just how many callers hang up when they know they are speaking to a machine...... much better than playing games as that makes us as guilty as them, IMHO.

Personally, I have no intention of dumbing down in that way.
Crazy to sympathise with those seeking to prosper from criminal activity. Next you will want us to empathise with muggers, be on the same wavelength as burglars, and generally support all other low life. What about those dodging around H&S issues, just to put bread on the table, you realise. We should be sympathetic with them, shouldn't we?

Its a shame you don't possess the imagination to appreciate the consequences of turning down a job should you be out of work.

Jim, thanks for taking the time to offer sound advice.
However, for reasons I can't really discuss, this would not work for Mum & it would neither stop the calls or make the silent ones less intimidating for somebody who lives on her own.
Victor
Yes, I personally have "played games" with callers, but that is my prerogative! Why on earth should I put up with my days & evenings being interrupted by cold callers, & to say that it makes us as guilty as they are is ridiculous IMHO!
They have chosen to enter my personal space, so must accept whatever response I choose to give!

If we can prevent, suppress, dissuade or otherwise block the actions of those who have nefarious intent than it is our collective responsibility to do so.
That is a measure of a civilised society.
Then again, you might wish to support them.............
