First time for me signing on the job centre £71.00 per week for the first 6 months, my advisor asked me to keep a log of my job hunting, I have applied for jobs but nothing as yet

The gov gave job seekers a 1% cost of living increase, so it is £71.70, try not to spend it all at once (1/2 a loaf of bread).

Do try and keep your spirits up, hard to do sometimes. The job market seemed to have ebbs and flows, so either nothing at all or a few things to apply for.

Consider all options, there were jobs at the start of my unemployment that later I wished I had applied for, but at the time did not seem appropriate.

If made redundant you may qualify for money to do training (may be limited to the first 6 months), Job centre did not tell me. Any additional training good, and good for the spirit.

Good luck with the hunt.

Chris

Have you thought about trying self employment?

While looking for employment you could ask around to see if any small businesses need fire risk assessments, risk assessments, safety audits etc.

From small acorns ......................

Otherwise just be patient and keep on keeping on, something will turn up.

Good luck

I will keep em peeled for you Terry; dont get too down hearted - having been there and done that it is a frightening prospect but you will survive and come out of it stronger and more resilient.
As Chris has said earlier dont discount anything - any port in a storm as they say.
Best wishes

What level of H&S professional are you? I was made redundant from a multinational extractive and minerals company last year after 9 years as an H&S advisor. I was worried that there would be no hope, and after looking, the job market appeared quite flat. After getting my CV out there with the many specialist agencies, I began to make progress and secured a job with an offshore company. It was a stop gap. I decided to look further a field and continue with my job search and I managed to secure a job in the Middle East. Its a case of back to basics here but if you feel you can (and enjoy) educating the masses then this may be an option. The area now realises that the best safety advisors / managers are expats (british) and IOSH is well respected here. The package is great and if you can stand the heat, it may be worthwhile giving it a go and putting it on your CV. Im enjoying the daily challenges and it is worthwhile. In a culture that is as immature as here, making a difference is a real driver for me and reminds why I went into H&S - to ensure people go back home to their families entact. The conditions and production pressures are high here and people DO die at work. The hype about working in the UAE is unsubstantiated and my wife and son enjoy a good standard of living (married staus is easier in a muslim country). Worth a try perhaps...good luck in whatever you do.

Good news Terry, go and nail it on Tuesday - don't spend too long in the sun over the weekend you don't want to show up with two white rings around your eyes.

Hiya Terry,
All the best with your second interview - you can do it!!!!
You have had a very busy year, but you gained Chartered membership and that will have stood you in good stead in confidence and communication for the interview seat.
Everything crossed for you.

Their loss Terry, the heat has evidently clouded their brains.

So what Qualifications did they want for a H&S position ? or was it specialised in some way.

Keep on plugging away.

Terry,

Don't know if you have a LinkedIn profile but it is an excellent networking tool. If you feel that I can be of any use to you, please PM me a landline number and I'll ring you.

Keep the chin up.

Ciarán makes an excellent point - LinkedIn is a very good site to be registered on if looking for opportunities. Many recruitment agencies are on LinkedIn that seem to actively search profiles looking for suitable candidates.

its nearly 4 weeks now looking for a job, still no sign of a start, it looks like shelf stacking in a supermarket on nights for a bit, so I can still look for work in the day, to save me spending my hard earned savings.

Keep positive Terry; something will turn up - have you approached agencies with a view to short term contract work? That's is how I got my foot in the door where I am now.

Had a good job interview, a few weeks ago, in Swansea, had a phone call to say I have been shortlisted to attend a 2nd interview, at the head office in Bristol on the 30th August, so I am working on my presentation now, there is only one other person in the running

Terry, you must be the other only other H&S person I know who is also unemployed. I have been looking for over a year, but I've only just started drawing unemployment benefit 3 weeks ago, but I get only get £34.00 because I have £6000.00 savings - I shouldn't have been so honest!

Dont give in Rob, yes it is difficult but if you are determined then something will come up. Maybe look at other roles that you can take on and then 'migrate' into safety. Without knowing your circumstances its a bit difficult to offer anything more specific.
Best wishes

Still no job, so I am doing my CSCS Managers Test next week, to see if I can get onto site,I had an interview with an employer yesterday, to work for him on Minimum wage to keep my CPD up to date, and I have done RA's for a small company for free to keep myself in H & S mode, I will give it until Xmas, then look at maybe getting a job abroad

Terry
Sorry to read of your difficulties - I write to offer some critical advice in relation to the CSCS MAPs test you are about to take.

Do not believe for one minute that you know all the answers to all questions. I read the CSCS question and answers book from cover to cover and viewed the DVD until I was confident I knew what was expected. Still failed to answer one question correctly - the horse riders on country roads one.

I would strongly advise reading the booklet (if you are really strapped for funds let me know {pm me} and I will gladly send you the book and DVD foc).

Five incorrect answers will result in failure. The fail ratio is also quite staggering.
The CSCS card alone is unlikely to land you a position, however it might just tip the balance in your favour for interview if endorsed on your c/v.

Well at long last, I had a job interview yesterday, just had a phone call, they offered me the job for QHSE Manager, for a manufacturing company, start work on Monday 30th September 13, its not a good salary, but its a job, to keep my skills up to date, and I will be starting from scratch with the policies and procedures, so a good place to make a name for myself

Congratulations! Just goes to show that hard work pays off.

Keep you eyes open for better paying positions, if indeed the econmy is turning in the right direction maybe over the coming years more roles will become available!

Good luck with your new challenge.

All experience is good, while you look for the better paid position. South Wales still seems to lag in the H&S Job front at the moment, so well done.

That is excellent news Terry, maybe have a celebratory drink tonight?
Hard work and perseverance pays off in the end, take the job to keep the wolves from the door, develop yourself into someone that either makes your employer want to keep you and reward you as such or someone that others want to take on on better terms.
Have a good weekend
