Good Morning all,
I wonder if someone can help me. I am very interested in moving over to Toronto towards the end of 2014, now I plan to sit the CMIOSH interview in September and hopefully on passing that I will go on to sit the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals exam.
Presently in the UK I have the NEBOSH General Certificate and NVQ Level 5 Diploma and 6 years in Health and Safety which has been spent in the Facilities Management, Construction and Nuclear industries.
Would anyone know if my qualifications are recognised over there? Would I have to start off at the bottom of their Health and Safety career ladder? Would you suggest I gain anymore qualifications prior to going out there?
And finally would anyone know what the jobs are like over there? Is there a growing need for Health and Safety Professionals and what industries are most popular with Health and Safety?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Owen

Hi Owen
My brother is hoping to emigrate to Canada next year (something he's been planning for quite a while). He's on holiday at the moment (ironically over in Canada!) but if I remember correctly they have a point system over there for those wishing to emigrate. So, having a degree in a relevant topic gets you x points etc. You normally have to meet that requirement then show that they couldn't hire a Canadian for the job you are apply for. Most of the "city" jobs would likely go to Canadians unless it's a specialist field so you might have to look further afield such as Nova Scotia initially.
I think my brother is hoping to get in through his existing employer - though he has to have worked a year with them to qualify for that type of working visa.
There are organisations out there that can help with emigrating to Canada and the type of visa you might require so may be worth chatting to them as they usually have staff that can determine whether there are jobs in your chosen field and location and perhaps organise interviews etc for you (for a fee mind!).
A long shot but given it's construction / nuclear could have a look at skyscrapercity.com at (North American forum) as it has a section on Canada which includes construction proposals so could give you an idea of what is being built in the Toronto area and whether the market is flatlining or blossoming in that region.
Good luck!!

Get in touch with the CSSE - great bunch of people. The BCSP is a separate organisation - IOSH have a mou with them regarding qualifications and you may be able to get more credit than you thought. Be willing to look at developing your own 'conversion' subjects such as legal systems as the Canadian system is slightly different to ours - heavily on state insurance schemes etc.
I did a recent article in Tolleys specifically for working in the US and Canada - it may be useful just to know where you are etc.
I Skype all the time with the US - free and very good way of making friends. Perhaps email the regional chair regarding job prospects etc. and try to establish a couple of contacts who might keep their eyes open for you.
