a PSOP is just a writtem 'working method procedure'/'written system of work' under another name

In the back of HSG179 is a list of headings you can use to create your own (page113). Each pool is different so the PSOP will differ in most cases. Using someone else's won't really help. You just need to reflect what your pool set up and systems are.

You should concentrate on completing your NOP and EAP as a priority as these effectively constitute your PSOP for you pool (as stated on page 15 of HSG179 - available via the free electronic copy available on the HSE website). Appendix 4 of HSG179 (page 101) provides you with headings from which you can start to put together your NOP and EAP. Any ancillary and equally important elements not covered by the headings for the NOP and EAP can be inserted either in the NOP or EAP as separate headings/sections as appropriate to the subject/risk area.

As per other advice, each pool is different and completing your own PSOP rather than copying another will mean that your PSOP will be relevant to your pool and take into consideration your pool, plant and systems and the individual way in which it all operates. This will ensure that you end up with a robust document that will stand up to any review. For what it's worth as a former H&S enforcement officer inspecting all types of pools I have seen all different types and formats of PSOP's and where content of the PSOP was individual to the pool in nearly all instances they were fine with very little recommendations or advice from me required. Follow HSG179 and the information it contains and you will not go far wrong. If you draft something you can always contact your local council H&S enforcement officer and ask them for some feedback on it. The advice and guidance is free and you will get quality feedback that will ensure that you are on the right side of the legislation (I often gave advice and guidance during visits and via query's over the phone). Hope that helps.

Thank you Chris, it was a blank template (if that makes sense) that I was looking for to save developing a new document.

Apprecaite your sound advice.

Hi Malcolm, I will have a look to see if I have anything resembling a blank template (I may have one at home from my enforcement days) and will get back to you (it may be tomorrow at the earliest).

Hi Malcolm, if you get in touch with me at my work email (chris.lynch@essex-fire.gov.uk) I have two documents that should be of use to you. They are not templates, but are two PSOP's that I came across when in enforcement a few years ago that I was going to use to turn into a template and give out to pool operators in support of improving the health and safety and operational management of their pool (where required). I never got around to amalgamating them and compiling the template, but they certainly in my opinion contain all that is required for a good PSOP. If you drop me an email I can forward them on to you.
