My company employs 250 staff in the UK and the vast majority of our products are exported to China and Korea. We are in the process of setting up regional sales offices and small-scale repair workshops in both those countries but I'm not sure of the legal frameworks of either.

Obviously we will ensure that the level of safety is maintained to the same level as we insist on in the UK. The work undertaken will comply with our existing policies and procedures. But our role is about safety and compliance and I'm having difficulty in finding out how we maintain compliance with local regulations, etc. As an example the HSW Act requires our company to have a Safety Policy. But I wouldn't know where to start in preparing one for China - indeed I don't even know if one is legally required.

A few years ago we went through this in the USA but with a common language it was a lot easier.

Has anyone out there got any experience of setting up workplaces in China and or Korea? Any information etc. would be gratefully received.

I'm sorry I have not been working with these countries but the following page will give you details of occupational safety organisations in most countries:

This might help...They work on safety councils in each region. I am hoping my contact comes back shortly with some suggestions to help.

We have a 'sister' company based in China who are part of our group.
A recent delagation who visited us in the UK were astounded at the difference in the H&S culture between the 2 companies.
They have refused to adopt any of our policies, procedures, or even our general attitude to H&S, although this may change now following my report to group.

On the face of it a very strong statement, which, all things being equal I support, however...I am sure that you have been more tolerant than your statement suggests as there are lots of cultural factors that come into play implementing western procedures and policies into other countries...

Having been asked several times by various Chairmen to 'just cut and paste' policies that work in the west into Africa and Asia..it isn't as simple as do as I say..
