Hoping that there are some practitioners out these in the IT industry. I am specifically looking for some guideline or industry guidance on specifications for servicing of IT in confident spaces. Within design what would be the ideal (Note:- other than saying don't put it in confident spaces). We are at design stages in design for under some our courts and I want to ensure I have read some of the working methodologies and solutions industry use within this area, to reduce foreseeable impacts. If anyone has anything then please direct mail me and I'll send you my email. Andrew Böber CMIOSH FRSPH FRGS

Andrew, I would have thought IT equipment performance (never mind maintenance) would suffer in a Confined Space (as defined -see Regs/HSE website for more). You say you're at the design stage. The Designers should first of all be looking to design out the confined space?

Andrew: Not entirely clear what you are asking for here... But I do know of a Dutch entrepreneur who is developing an extremely oddly-named (but very sound commercial) concept for distributing IT servers to domestic properties where the waste heat can be utilised efficiently. By distributing the servers - you get less heat build-up in one place, so less need for additional cooling, and because the heat is used - everyone wins. Unfortunately the idea is currently being developed under the name 'nerdalize'... (Don't try to substitute the 'English' "s" or you will get live sex cams....). Mahijs is a friend of the family. As for UK confined spaces - these are defined by the Regs by reference to a list of specified risks. I cannot think what risks IT installations might face or create? Steve
