I noted that when DSEAR came in most petrol stations displayed the Ex sign but you do not see them now. I thought perhaps there had an industry wide assessment that showed it was not required based on projected levels of vapout in the air.

There must be an industry standard Are we assessing tanker offloads here or just car refueling? I would start http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l133.htm http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l138.pdf http://www.energyinst.or...ng/filling-stations/pelg I would assume zone 2 around pumps - but to what distance I don't know with out putting some effort in :) I did a project on mobile phone masts as an ignition source once, I can't find the maths but the ignition energy was only sufficient to ignite petrol within about a 2m radius of the mast. The standard is BS 6656 - if I remember correctly: I am off for a three day weekend

Read and understand Energy Institute Publication IP Part 15 3rd Edition A petrol station is a standard case, in terms of hazardous area classification - plenty of diagrams showing the extent of hazardous areas when cars refuel Not that most of the public would have the slightest clue about Zone ratings

Agree with Prenders. Copy everyone else. Use IP (was Institute of Petroleum, now Energy Institute) Model code of safe practice Part 15, Area Classification. Petrol stations are in Section 3.9.3 with nice pictures and distances. You might be able to reinvent an Area Classification based something different, but the standard IS IP 15, and saves the hard work of reinvention.
