Hi, How long should training on a Low level order picker take and also how long should a refresher take?

Hi Lisa, The training will depend on the previous experience of the trainee and is at the Trainers discretion. As a Minimum I would say 1-2 days with 1 or half a day refresher. I believe someone like R.I.T.T.I.B may stipulate a minimum amount of time so could be worth giving them a call. I used to drive one back in the day (about 18 years ago) and I think it was only a day back then.

Hi Lisa, Been a while since I've taught it and I honestly can't remember but Mr Flibble's comments sound about right as long as that's for basic training only. The course duration is also dependent on the number of trainees which should never exceed 3 per instructor. Subjects involving a larger amount of theory like battery maintenance, safety, etc. would often take the same amount of time as for rider operated FLT's.

Not necessarily. If you are only talking about the basic test of practicle operating skills that's probably close. However, they should also undertake a theory test and a pre-use inspection test. All in, probably about an hour per candidate.

An interesting question as organisations will vary widely. The authoritative guidance is provided by RTITB in ther training duration matrix, but I do question for non LOLER equipment the practicability, but the matrix is here: http://www.rtitb.co.uk/a...RS_Matrix__V8.05.12_.pdf The hours for LLOP's ranges from 8 hours (1:1 existing user) to 15 hours (3:1 novice user). But for basic operation (movement and lifting / lowering the forks) and training in pre-use checks etc. I don't necessarily need 8 hours training!! For context, my previous employer (8 warehouses c. 1000 warehouse staff) delivered LLOP training by line management to operatives, theory and demo probably within a 30 minute timeframe and then operatives monitored by shift manager for first few days. That said I do know of other companies that have much more in-depth (accredited) training - but you need to balance the risks -what's the environment (risk of colliding with pedestrians? racking? any other risk areas? Or is it quite simple and not much could go wrong?. In my honest opinion I don't think you need a whole day 1:1 to train someone to use a LLOP. Ultimately it is down to competence, if you (or someone who is competent to determine operator competence) is happy that individuals are competent users of LLOP's after your 20min session, then that's fine in my book.

Hi We train for one day on LLOP. Don't under estimate the damage a badly driven LLOP can do to racking, other MHE and pedestrians. Do you want to explain to HSE/EHO that the LLOP that broke a warehouse operatives leg only had 20 minutes training? Or to the warehouse manager why an aisle of racking has been closed due to a LLOP taking out a leg? Ian
