Hello,

Does anyone have some good ideas for interesting, debatable topics a vast amount of Safety Managers can discuss over a two day period, from a Food Manufacting background.

Also 1 day for office people.

Have some ideas but would love to try and think of some more, scratching my brain a little.

Thanks for your help and advice
Katie

Hi Katie,

I am a H&S officer for a food manufacturing plant with over 280 staff. Some areas I would discuss are:

Management of Risks is always a good topic. RA's, SSoW, areas of good and poor practice, importance of hazard/near miss reporting and accident reporting, future projects/plans, proactive versus reactive monitoring, feedback etc.

Machine guarding and PUWER - Always a hot topic with the HSE. Maybe produce some recent court cases and company prosecutions that are applicable to your company. Discuss areas of concern. The importance of competent persons etc. Then you could get into discussing the engineering department. (problematic in every job sector!)

The whole topic of Fire Management - Fire RA, emergency plans, drills, use of marshals, weekly bell tests, monthly extinguisher checks etc.

The relationship/crossover between H&S and QA Department.

Occupational Health - health surveillance, sickness and absenteeism, Return to Work interviews, First Aiders.

Feedback regarding your health and safety noticeboard.

Hope you can use some of the above.

Consider also practical topics such as monitoring (e.g. supervisor), hygiene / welfare provisions, dust exposure, traffic management, lighting / environmental, existing ill health / skin conditions, different employee groups (e.g. cleaners), any access restrictions, signage, manual handling and maintenance. Hope there are some here which are worth including.

Hi Katie,
RIDDOR reporting always seems to be a topic of discussion on here. Why not set up some scenarios for debate as to what is reportable and which is not.

Katie - here's a few suggestions to add to what others have said......

Maintenance and cleaning. Slips and trips. Ergonomics and seating (including conveyor belt design - there's relatively recent HSE guidance).

The replacement RIDDOR for GB from 1 October. If you've got plants in NI and/or ROI - how you are going to comply with different legislative requirements.

Next year's replacement for CDM.

By any chance do you have any bulk ammonia? Two multiple fatality accidents in China since June (well over 130 dead in explosion/fire and within the last few days from exposure to toxic gas)

You could try the psychological impact of serious injuries or fatalities on witnesses to the event and the general workforce.
