You are right Paul, I do know where you are, I almost called you today but thought I'd open it up to the forum, looks like I should have called you anyway.
I just need to know what level of competence is required for a, electrical contractor to install on a shop fitting job, new electrics to the unit, new lights and sockets etc. in a new out of town retail unit?

Ok, just a quick one, are we talking a sole trader / 1 "man" Ltd. Co., or a larger contractor employing several electricians?

Quite a large company, can attend multiple sites, usually 2 men on site, at least one is competent, trained etc.
I just wish to know the level of training for him to test and certificate?
Thanks Paul.

Hi FS,
I would personally like to see the "qualified" guy being apprenticeship served, or holding NVQ3.
Also, 17th & the I&T exam, 2391 or the new 2394, preferably the 2395 also.
A Gold JIB card could also be useful.
IF they are undertaking all of the design of the electrical installation then I would expect further qualifications.
I would also expect to see test equipment ON site & being used BEFORE circuits are energised, even temporary ones, along with, temporary, even paperwork to confirm that the required inspections & tests under BS7671 had been completed, even on temp supplies.
Please realise that this is all, only IMHO.
Some of which is based on requirements of legislation and standards, the rest is based on the person that I would employ to do that work & trust to do it and the way that I would do it/want it done.
