Hi everyone,

Hypothetical scenario. Someone slips on a site and falls and lands on their wrist, as a precaution they are told to go to hospital and get an X-ray and are diagnosed with a hairline fracture. The person feels fine to work the following day and has not complaints of pain at all. No cast, no bandage etc. Is this still RIDDOR reportable?

I know HSE guidance specifies any fractures other than fingers, thumbs and toes are reportable, so may have just answered my own question here. Just thought I'd put it out there.

Reportable or Non Reportable?

Reportable. As you said you answered your own question.

I am left wondering why you might create such a hypothetical scenario!

However, I to think you have already answered your own question (as RIDDOR stands at the moment). I would suggest that it is reportable.

I suppose the question is 'when is a fracture not a fracture'............. The guide to Schedule 1 describes a fracture as a break, crack or chip, and dear old Wiki describes a 'hairline fracture' as an incomplete fracture or sliver or crack in the bone.

So I would agree that your scenario of hairline fracture is a major injury as defined in the Regs.

My only question in your scenario, is that the cause of the 'slip' is not clearly defined, so was it arising out of or in connection with work?
