Can anyone offer some advice please?

I have the NEBOSH General Certificate, Construction Certificate and Diploma Part 1 the last of which I obtained in 2002. I'm currenlty in an SHE adminstrators role following a move from part to full time.

The move was to gain practical experience which was previously restricted for the past 6 years of part time working however the move has not been of real benefit and I am now considering whether there is a future for me in H&S.

My confidence is somewhat jaded and I need to consider what else I could adapt my current skills for should I decide to try another career path. If I were to stay in H&S then I would ideally like a mentor to get my confidence back.

Any advice.

Its difficult with being part time, would you go back full time? if you need part time how about going down a training route?

Have you considered contacting IOSH directly as I am sure that they have a mentoring and support programme. When thinking about a career move think about why you came into H&S, many do this by accident but discover the pleasure of assisting people in being safe etc and then consider where your lack of confidence is to identify courses that you could attend. It may also be worth going to branch meetings and network - I find going to meetings and even looking on this forum a great boost for confidence when you realise than many other professionals would give similar advice to yourself.

The question is really one that only you can answer. Do you want a career in Health and Safety?

If I had my time again I would not have got my first job in H&S, I would have stayed right away from this profession. So that makes me biased against this profession, which is very over-populated at the moment by the way. However, many people also feel the same about the profession they are in, whatever that profession. They all have their irritations. And they can also all be difficult to start out in. Which is why I haven't changed profession!

However, if it's what you really want then stick with it and find a way. People will help if you show enough passion and commitment.

Good luck.
