Good evening all,

I am new in to this world of health and safety and have only ever gained experience by volunteering for my local theatre company who needed a health and safety Advisor.

In September I am undertaking my NEBOSH Diploma, however feel I could do with having more practical experience.

This is were my plea comes in;

In this economic climate nobody is taking on traniees however does anybody know where or how I can get a job as a trainee on a lower wage then a health and safety advisor I am currently trying with a recruitment agency and am just waiting to hear back, however any further help or offers would be greatly appricated.

I am in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.

Thank you in advance for your assistance

Lewis

Hi

Make yourself known at the Humber IOSH branch, there's nothing wrong with announcing what you have just said at the meeting. I would be happy to introduce your request if you wish.

Regards

Linda

I agree with Linda and recommend that you attend IOSH and other safety group meetings. There are groups affiliated to Safety Groups UK based in north east Lincolnshire, north Lincolnshire and on the north bank too.

Let me know if you need help finding them.

Hi Lewis,

It would be of help to know of any particular areas of interest you have, or are considering working in so as to try to point you in any one particular direction.
I may know of a number of people who could assist. PM me and we can look at a few things.

Remember we all started off like you with little experience at some point, but as time goes on your confidence and Knowledge will improve along with experience. Like the previous posts above the IOSH groups are a excellent place to gain further experience and make contacts this will help over the long term improve your career.

Good Morning Michael,

Thank you for your comments,

It is a weird situation with the job market at the minute, a lot of places are looking for experienced health and safety advisors but you cannot receive the experience with out the job.

After discussing it with other people on this forum I can see the best way would be networking at the IOSH events I also believe that joining some agencies may be the best way forward to try and get in to a Permeant position.

I would volunteer if I could however I currently require my job to pay for my Diploma and also living expenses.

As you said we all start out like this and I believe with a positive and determined attitude I will be able to progress within a health safety and environment role.

Thanks
Lewis Ward

Its always been like this
What is different (over the past few years) is that there are well qualified H&S out of work so they obviously get the few jobs going.

I admire you for funding the DIP by working elsewhere
With that sort of attitude someone will try to help you
Follow the good advice you have had here but maintain a presence on the forum

Job market in the offshore industry for HSE staff is very good if you have experience. I was very lucky to get my break as I decided to send out fifty letters to oil and gas contractors in Aberdeen. Out of that I got two interviews and was successful in one.

Thank you Niknok01 I have to stay local in the Humber and Yorkshire region until I have done my Diploma.

I have been looking at offshore work but do require experience in Health and Safety First.

Thanks
Lewis

Hi folks

Lewis came to our Humber Branch event this week, appeared a little hesitant but he honestly impressed me with his knowledge during the events break away sessions.

Thanks Lewis for coming and it looks like you will start to make some good contacts.

He's already engaged now for some event work this weekend!

Hi Linda,

Thank you for that, I appreciate your help so far, I must admit it was very daunting walking in yesterday but everyone was really friendly and approachable.

I am really looking forward to future ventures and meeting new people also absorb more knowledge to help me progress further.

Thanks

Lewis
