I have noticed that in several threads that the best way to make contacts for possible employment tips and advise is to go to branch meetings. My problem is that my nearest branch is impossible for me to get to. As first of all the practicality of getting there and the fact I work shifts so do not have the time.

I am sure there are others who are, or have been, in the same position and wonder how they get round this dilemma.

Regards

Mike

Hello Mike,
Have you tried approaching your employer about permitting you time away from work?
I have pointed out to my employer that interacting with other, more experienced health and safety professionals is an integral part of my cpd and therefore of benefit to the company. Attending branch meetings and presentations in work time is for their benefit, not mine as an individual, and they are happy to support this.

best of luck

Barry

I have the same problem. I work part-time and the branch meetings are held on a Thursday (one of the days I don't work). I have a small child and can't get childcare cover for that day so simply can't go unless my OH takes a day off work which isn't practical for either of us.

Hopefully when my daughter starts school I will be able to go but as they are over in Edinburgh and typically held over lunch into the afternoon, I probably wouldn't get back to the school gates in time for walking her home so that might not be an option either....

Just wish they'd change the day occasionally (say once a quarter) to a Monday instead!

I have been in this situation for many years; it has been suggested that as a council member (elect still) I raise the possibility of an 'internet' branch where members such as ourselves can have a meeting over the interwebnetthingy. This is beyond my technical capability of setting up but I will ask the question on behalf of the wider membership.
As with many things if there is the demand then things may well happen so if you are interested please make it known on here.
Regards
Stuart

I work away most weeks covering sites UK wide and can never get to branch meetings, as much as I would like to get there.
