Hi, I am looking to find a piece of information on how much space is needed behind a desk (rather than adequate space) before it becomes too small an area for a desk to be added.
I am sure (and I could be making this up) that I have read somewhere about needing approx 1m behind a desk to allow a chair to be pushed out therefore allowing the user free movement to leave the work station without fear of falling over. But can't for the life of me remember where I have heard this or indeed find it again.
If I have made this up, is there any other specific information other than "adequate space"?
Thanks

It depends on the office layout, the thing to consider is that sufficient space has to be provided to allow for a safe orderly evacuation, if desks are in long rows then the person furthest from the walkway has to be able to get to it safely. If rows of desks are back to back then you have to leave sufficient space to allow both this and to stop the backs of chairs colliding.
As far as I am aware 1m is deemed sufficient, however remember that there should ideally be 11 cubic meters of space per person before furniture is installed, taking a ceiling height of 2.4m I think when that is included in the calculations CAD space planning programs give 1m behind the chair..
