Hello all. My sister works clamping cars and a colleague of hers was beaten up today. From what she has told me in the past the whole company's attitude to health and safety is pretty poor. My question is this; she said that she has seen a risk assessment stating that they must go out clamping in pairs but they don't as they all signed a form saying that they accept a payment of £125 (I cant remember if she said this is a one off or a month). Surely this isn't right? If your RA says one thing then that's that isn't it? Thanks in advance.

Ill reserve comment on Clampers and stick to my answer... If the Company has made the H&S rules then Employees cannot sign a "disclaimer" from their H&S duties. The Company needs to enforce the rules but that said they won't make as much money then - effectively 50% less.

Its the DVLA. Not some dodgy carpark clamping company ;) Thanks for your reply though. She has no idea where she stands re lone working. I said I thought the disclaimer wasn't worth the paper it was written on and acts more as a psychological barrier against complaining.

Oh I know the DVLA pretty well and people working there - don't get me started........!!! (Prefer Clampers!) Yep you are correct - not worth the paper it is written on. Hopefully she can get this sorted soon by a Senior Manager

Thanks for the replies. I think she was just worried that the same could happen to her. Apparently they have all raised concerns re lone working but fear they would just be replaced by people who are willing to go out alone. I will let her know what you have said and she can take it from there. I think the best thing would be for her to contact her Senior Manager like you said. She has been reluctant to, up until now, for the above reason.. they don't like to upset the apple cart. Shame it took someone getting attacked for something to change, if indeed it does. Thanks again.

I have submiited a Freedom of Information request to the DVLA asking them how many clampers have suffered phsical violence and what is their practice on lone working.
