Personal hand tools and power tools in the workplace

Does anybody out there have a Policy on staff using their own tools, including power tools, at work. I'm sure to get lots of replies saying that the Policy is it's not permitted - but in the company I work for, and many more I'm sure the reality is that skilled trades will often bring in their own personal tools e.g. carpenters. Comments gratefully received.

Not sure why employees would not be allowed to use their own hand tools? We have a policy whereby hand tools are checked on a monthly basis and powered tools by their relevant periodic test date monthly/3 monthly/6 monthly etc.
Your policy should be very simple to put together but there is little or no point in you adopting someone else`s 'policy' on this as it depends on the type of work, work environment and types of tools allowed/disallowed.

I agree with jarsmith that lots of industries have employees using their own tools. The main thing is to ensure that they are maintained (and guarded where appropriate) the same as company tools. There are lots of ways to achieve this but it depends on your unique circumstances.

Amoung other things U also have to consider HAVS, Noise doses and emissions as they are still employees as letting people use that own tools is cheap in the begining but can be expensive later on

As Bob said but also, some hand tools such as torque wrenches require calibrating so you would also need to manage that aspect.

I am not disagreeing with the last two posts however these would just be the norm of considerations whether tools are supplied or not. I was simply referring to the original comment of "I'm sure to get lots of replies saying that the Policy is it's not permitted". As with all general advice on this forum, it is impossible to cover all eventualities.

Hi Reed, our policy like a lot of others I have come across dose not stipulate anything about personal tools but all equipment must be tested and tagged as appropriate to its use. The problems usually arise when items get damaged or go missing. Good luck anyway.
