I'm looking for guidance on the safety features of a cardboard baler. We already have e-stop buttons and a pull-wire above the conveyor, however do we need to also have a system whereby the operative wears a belt which triggers a sensor/stops the conveyor should they fall into the pit and end up on the conveyor?
How many people in the recycling industry actually use this system? Are they cost-effective - my understanding is that they cost c.£15k to install. Any guidance/recommendations anyone can give would be much appreciated.

I would have thought you should put something in place to prevent the fall into the pit, not stop the conveyor if they do. Perhaps both.

You are coming at this from the wrong direction. The Machinery Directive requires that you start by identifying the hazards, then estimate and evaluate the risks from the hazards and then finally eliminate the hazards or reduce the risks as far as possible. It's only at this final stage that you consider specific safety precautions. This is not optional. There is no get-out for cost effectiveness or "as far as reasonably practicable".
