A friend is a normal General Builder. He has been asked by a friend to build a small steel frame clad showroom for a car sales business. It will be notified and there will be the steel erectors, plumber, carpenter and electrician as well as himself working on the project. His friend wants him to be PC but he is worried that he will have to get extra insurance for this. He has all required insurances for his general building works and feels comfortable in being the PC its just the insurance aspect that is worrying him. Can anyone help it is outside my comfort zone but I cannot find the answer anywhere else. IMO it should be the Clients responsibility but I am not sure. Ta Alex Ta Alex

Alex, I could be wrong but I would suspect that he already carries the insurances required for the advice he gives clients/customers and works he undertakes & I would almost guarantee that he has subbies working for him on previous works, for belts & braces I would get him to contact is own insurance and talk them through his intentions.

I agree with dennish; plus You also need to confirm the notifiability of the project as if its notifable you also need a CDMC; and a good CDMC will advise the client accordingly - if nobody is sure about the term notifiable then a construction competent H&S adviser should be consulted

There's lot of 'friends' here! If your 'friend' already has ELI and PLI then I would have thought he would be adequately covered; I don't think that there is any need for additional insurance merely because he is the PC! And why worry about it? If he is unsure, surely just ask his insurance broker or insurer; job done worry over!
