How can personnel work on conveyors some 20ft in height, the personnel are attached to a lanyard and harness, the lanyard runs directly down the middle of the conveyors, it is advised that the personnel crawl rather than walk up the conveyors to distribute body weight and also stop the chance of a fall over the side. The conveyors are in a waste treatment plant and the conveyors can contain anything sharps, glass, metal, especially if the conveyor jams when full and personnel need to gain access how can we work on them, three points of contact are advised and sometimes the harness needs to be unclipped to access another area, it was suggested that a piece of rubber matting be used to stop stick injuries, but how do you move the mat and maintain contact, advise suggestions

I assume there is no way you can get in with a boom lift or a scissor lift as this would be the answer if this is possible. I do know from experience that the people who design MRF's often overlook the need for maintenance

I've had it before when conveyors have been used to access certain areas but not for general access and egress. The conveyors we had originally started off with no access points, it was later found that access to certain parts of the plat were needed so hand rails and access platforms were made along with a lanyard attachment.
This was for composted materials running on the belt with some belts being full of waste at a time of blockages.
If they are using it for general access and egress then that is plain wrong. What do they do if there is a fire there, there will need to be a way to escape and walking down a conveyor belt may be a secondary exit but definitely not a first. Seems as though no design has gone into this or they won't spend the money on proper stair access. Do you have any pics to post?

Didn't read it properly. It's not being used for general access and egress for the picking employees. Sorry about that.
First part of my reply still stands but I also mirror bentonsr as maintenance access does get overlooked.
Boil it down to a risk assessent and see what the outcome in.
