Morning all, please excuse me but this is my first post on a discussion forum so hopefully I am doing this in the correct manner...

Here goes, can anyone advise me on the safety requirements of gym equipment, in that I mean prudent legislation and requirements posed. I understand that certain equipment may have its own individual requirements but if you have any experience of this field that you have and don't mind sharing, this would help me out hugely.

Kindest regards

Hi Paul

I have two small gyms in my organisation which are run slightly different but with the same overall theory. (One in Scotland one in England)

Each has a Risk Assessment.

The equipment is treated in a similar fashion to work equipment and therefore we have a regular maintenance and service contract and a fault reporting system.

We ensure that access is controlled and that those that have access have knowledge of the equipment and declare that they are physically fit. This is where the gyms differ. One employs a qualified fitness instructor on a part time basis to carry out inductions and the health questionnaire. The other requires the user to complete the Health questionnaire and to read the user handbooks before use. The handbooks are checked regularly to ensure they are present.

The equipment is cleaned and there is also cleaning equipment supplied for the user to use.

The gyms have various signs about training alone, not using the equipment unless they are familiar, how to summon First Aid, No hot beverages etc.

We are in the process of fitting “Panic Alarms” due to the remote location of one of the gyms.

Hope this helps

I just want to say thank you to dbs and jarsmith83 for your comments and advice it has proved really useful and is helping me ascertain controls to implement. Now this may sound over the top at first but have you had any experience of power plates, designed to vibrate and in turn tone muscle. I have been asked if the control of vibration regulations are applicable.

My feeling is that it is not, due to the fact that it is actually classed as a medical device that is designed to vibrate and has controls to reduce or increase the amplitude and frequency as required coupled with initial assessments and medical information in place prior to use by contracted professional sports persons but would appreciate your thoughts... thank you in advance.

Vibrating Plates.

I did not overthink the installation of the vibrating plate. I decided that we only have a duty to ensure that it works correctly and that the instructions are available. Other than that, it is treated the same as the other equipment.

I think it is useful to note that this equipment is a benefit to staff and not their Work. They don't have to use it.

If you were working for Virgin or Fitness First things may be different as it is their core business.

Hope this helps

The equipment is being used for personal use rather than a work process, so no. Just ensure an adequate induction and training takes place to use the equipment, reference to the instructions will be required.Good luck!
