I have recently telephoned CISRS in order to apply for my scaffold inspectors card and I have just received the application form. The form states that if you have completed SMSTS, CSCS within the last two years or managing safely, you are eligible for the card (the cert already states you have passed and can inspect scaffolds). When I telephoned to query where I stand, they sated that a diploma/NVQ/all the NEBOSH Certs and being Chartered was not adequate enough and I am required to sit the CSCS managers category! I am totally bemused and I am not willing to shell out £25 pounds or whatever it costs now for a CSCS test. Anyone had similar difficulties? I already have a CSCS card with all my qualifications on so cannot understand this stance.

If you go on the CPCS helpline number and ask for contact details for Peter Brown the Products Manager talk to him.
He might not give you the answer you want but he is sensible and helpful.

Not sure if there is some confusion but my take on this and what I have been told by the CITB is to obtain the CISRS scaffold inspection card is that you must hold a CSCS test/NEBOSH construction cert/SMSTS that is no longer than 2 years old. You will need to provide this evidence so that you can book the course and remember it last 2 days.

I cannot understand the requirement of "2 years". I am chartered, I have numerous health and safety qualifications. Does it not seem ridiculous to you that there is a 2 year requirement? I will not all of a sudden lose my competency in health and safety. I update my skills with regular CPD as per IOSH code of conduct. I can totally understand the 5 yearly update for scaffold inspection as there is all walks of life attending these courses. A more sensible approach is required, and perhaps CISRS needs to look at the national qualifications framework, rather than specific courses like IOSH Managing Safely as a prerequisite? Very archaic approach indeed!

Yes I agree, I have site managers who have CSCS cards but as they are older than 2 years they are not deemed acceptable to sit the CISRS scaffold inspection course, yet the card is valid for 5 years !!

At present they only recognise certain qualifications within Health and Safety which would excempt you from having to sit a Health and Safety test and these must have been passed within the last 2 years.
I recently applied for a Managers Card (Black CSCS) and was initially told my NVQ Level 5 was sufficient to excempt me, then was told it was not. I raised the issue with them indicating that it was an NVQ which they request people to complete and in Health and Safety along with 6 years experience as a Health and Safety Advisor etc, they eventually accepted it but said that when this card expires I will need to re sit the H&S test.
I think they are going to review the qualification list which allows excemptions. Keep badgering them and see what happens!
