I need a reality check I think. I have done some googling and have found out that I can purchase extinguishers (CO2 specifically) online for around half the cost that I am being quoted by a well known fire safety company. Any views appreciated as I am wondering if this is too good to be true? A

We have been quoted a range of prices for standard 2kg co2 FE's ranging from about £50 up to £189 per unit. That is a wide range for exactly the same item. You can guess what we opted for.

We looked in into the very same thing. We then decided to train staff as installers/maintainers in order to cut costs. They do vary significantly.

My experience is that you can regularly get the physical extinguishers much cheaper but unless you have competent in-house personnel to carry out the commissioning as required under BS 5306-3:2009, you then need to pay for a competent person to commission, and depending on your supplier this can be costly depending on the number of extinguishers your have. When you purchase from the fire safety companies, the price usually includes the commissioning of the extinguishers.

I cannot comment about the online cost but I will say that the prices charged by the major fire protection companies do appear to have a very significant mark up. We used to purchase extinguishers via a purchasing consortium and the prices we paid were about a third of those on published price lists. We had an arrangement with a local approved company to carry out any commissioning and servicing required. The overall cost was still significantly lower than those quoted by the major companies.

Many thanks for the responses. When you take into account the added extras I guess the savings are not as much as I thought but it still pays to shop around. we are reviewing our provision and have identified that we have too many extinguishers. If we could afford it I would advise putting the new dry water mist ones in everywhere and taking away the confusion of 'which one do we use' plus, for historic buildings they look fantastic. A
