After doing my Nebosh courses i am looking for a more specific course in Health and Safety Law ( degree level or above) Could anyone recommend a course provider?
I work full time so full time is no good for me.
Many thanks

Hi Misty,

Not sure what your requirement is from your post. Do you already have a degree in another subject and want the H&S law element described as a post grad course? or do you want a law degree with H&S specialisation?

Open university has a good record with LLB courses, if you have 6 years and a fairly large stack of money. But it is time consuming, think NEBOSH diploma and add a bit.

There is a law firm (Eversheds) in Leeds that do summer schools in H&S law, been to a day seminar of theirs which was very good.

Most of the routine advertised courses are at a lower level for information rather than qualification - if that is what you are after.

Good luck in your quest,
S

Hi S,
I have done Dipolma and Cert.
I remember a chap doing a Health and Safety Law degree but i cant find one just in Health and Safety.
Failing that Law with a lot of H&S.
Distance Learning or OU
Thanks

I can understand you wanting to further ou education but it would be a waSte doing a degree specifically on health and safety law seeing as you have just completed a Diploma (which is basically first year of a degree in the national education framework). I would either go for masters (look up loughborough university for detaIls on distance learning) or do a straight out law degree with the open university and pick elements related to HS like criminal, civil and common law?

In a similar situation; did the cert years back but have had no luck securing any training with any of the firms I've worked for and moneys not exactly flush. The cost of some of the courses out there seems just ridiculous when you look at the content. Problem is that everywhere now seems to be looking for diploma level even for the most basic of roles; theres a few decent agents out there who'll fight your corner but its hard even with 10 years under the belt. Just goes to show how few firms understand what they actually require

Thanks jarsmith will look that up. Nimble it is a nightmare when you have Diploma and they want CMIOSH!! I think Cert plus experience is great and then help develop the employee up with Diploma but few are willing to do that due to the cost. You are right some agencys are excellent in steering Employers to the correct candidate with experience some however are just usless. I like law hence why i would like to study but need to do it whilst working and it also adds to my CPD.

Consider some of the MSc modules that organisations like The Open University offer - they are superbly delivered and at reasonable costs too and provide the flexibility of distance learning whilst working.

If you're lucky, your employer may even sponser you through it too

In the past, Salford University have run a short H&S law course for practitioners and solicitors (a great mix), and they did an MSc too, not sure if they still do. But the short course idea is much more practical.

Do you feel the Diploma has not been enough in this aspect? I don't believe that 'the law' is the most critical aspect of safety practitioning. Yes, a basic foundation, but citing the law at every turn is not especially useful. I have studied more law than many, for the sheer joy of it, but hardly ever need to actually use it. If in deep clag, the employer needs a lawyer!

Maybe think of another area which could add value to your 'offer' (as they like to say). The Diploma is good enough for many, especially once turned to CMIOSH, but employers often do seem to want the world. For example, training skills are frequently asked for, and are one of the really useful extra qualifications to have. Even a short 'train the trainer' course adds something, although PTTLS (?) is the base formal qualification (a year?).
