I am told paper / learning walls are common in primary schools i.e. the display of work etc !! I visited one this week but was surprised by the extent of paper coverage. How do our fire guys feel about this particularly when one considers the risk of arson !!!

You simply lock the doors to keep them out after hours.
The issue or problem is actually having posters along the escape route. The material used to line the walls of escape routes must be class 0. However, class 0 is not a class in its own right. To explain what is class 0 when there are actually only 4 classes (1 to 4), is what should be covered in a decent fire risk assessors course.
Crack on.

Thanks Betta, Every classroom has a fire exit door each placed in the centre of a paper clad wall. Now thinking of asking a local fire officer to view?

Something to consider is the perception within any school of where the main focus and risk lies. I absolutely agree that paper lined escape routes are a problem. EVERY head teacher, EVERY teacher and EVERY teaching support assistant, will be more concerned with what an OFSTED inspector will see, say and ultimately score the school on. I don't think ( might be wrong) OFSTED has any H&S remit beyond safeguarding children which is not about fire safety. As a former Governor I speak from exasperated experience. OFSTED is king in schools, H&S, well, I sometimes wondered,

It's all about balance really isn't it? 'Banning' a few posters may well be overkill
I read a fire risk assessment which went on about posters and displayed artwork on walls, but totally ignored the hundreds of coats and books in racks in the same corridor which added a fire loading AND reduced exit width (something the posters didn't do!)
A few posters in an otherwise clear corridor may be acceptable, but wall to wall posters and other combustibles may be a little too much

pdurkin - whose school is it, are you employed at the school or do your children attend?
Just wondering.
There will be a fire risk assessment and it will be available to you on request. The school may have been visited by the fire safety department of the local fire & rescue service and if so they will have a record of the visit and their review of the fire risk assessment.
I would suggest you ask to see the fire risk assessment then if not happy speak to the fire safety dept.
