i have been told that the red and white hazard tape, the type used as a warning of the roll, is no longer permitted on construction sites and should be replaced with the amber and black. Can any one put some light on this?

Thanks Mate, It was just a random comment by a contractor and i dismissed it as he could not give me a source other that he said he may have seen it on the HSE web site, (i have looked there), but thought it may have been something that got past me.

I believe the NASC have done some research into this and they have siad that black & yellow is better then red & white for people with sight problems. Regards PaulR

As Paul has alluded to above - I believe this relates to its use on scaffolding - where it seems that the black and yellow tape is more effective than the traditionally used red & white variant - following safety advice from the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) the NASC has advised members to switch - link to their infor here: http://www.nasc.org.uk/n...ellow_hazard_tape_change

Different industry but FYI I have been on board some offshore installations in various locations, where yellow/black tape is a caution, you can cross if it appears safe at the time, and red/white is absolute no go. At first I though, no, but when you see it being adhered to, then it can be good system, and saves the times when you find you can't get any movement around the rig because of barriers

There is no rules stating that red and white cannot be used likewise yellow and black it is left to company and site policy. The previous comment was quite correct yellow and black indicates caution and red and white indicates no entry.

Where is it written that either red/white or black/yellow tape is "hazard" tape? Last time I encountered a piece of tape stretched across my path, it meant I'd won a race...............but only if I borke through it.

Think about signage. Yellow/Black = Warning, Red/White = Prohibition.

Not necessarily a link the man in the street's going to make when presented with non-descript stripy tape. Does that sign outside my local Barber's mean I shouldn't go in? Didn't "candy stripe" come first? Are blue pin-stripe suits mandatory? Are bright green frogs not poisonous? You do realise this is a bit of banter......

Regardless of the type of tape, remember that managers can just duck under it.

Black and Yellow are nature's warning colours. We had a rule regarding snake colours. "Black and Yellow, kill a fellow". Some of the worlds most deadly snakes are this colour.
