How can I get on the health and safety ladder as I have nebosh certificate, cert ed, diploma in management, 6000 series I in construction , nvq level 2 bricklaying and 25 years experience of the construction industry with 11 years teaching construction but feel this is not enough, I've even contemplated doing voluntary work or should I go down the route of becoming an IOSH trainer

With NEBOSH NGC, you must be able to kick start in HSE Field. Try to do NEBOSH FIRE or Construction Certificate to get more exposure.............

I was in the same boat many years ago, found that I had to go and do some voluntary work to gain experience, then found a job with safety role as unison safety officer, used that as a stepping stone onto secondment. This was when I found that a Diploma was the best way to get recognition and the right job in the end. Just put yourself about, offer to safety audits in construction sites, link in with local NHS there is always opportunities.
Know what specialist areas you want to move into, local colleges who run constriction courses etc are also very good places to go.

Thanks for the positive replies, I find it frustrating at the moment because I actually teach construction in a college and H&S is a big part of the curriculum and its not as if I'm a rookie but it seems you need the experience. I may have to try voluntary work in my holidays but take on board what you say about it been slave labour/ exploitation. Is it worth me attending the IOSH regional meetings and doing some networking ???? If anyone knows of a position or opening please pm me. Im based in west yorkshire

Hi - the Yorkshire IOSH branch meeting was always well attended when I was living there. It is a good way of meeting people and building your network of contacts. I would try and make time to get to the meetings if you can!
